Computers are among the most used machines nowadays, if not ultimately the most used. Many people all over the world use computers, whether at work or at home, for business, education, leisure, or entertainment. However, computers are not perfect machines. Computers need to be taken care of and maintained regularly to prevent computer viruses. A computer virus is a form of malicious software created to access a computer system without the user’s knowledge. Viruses often disable systems, which results to poor computer performance. Other kinds of malicious software include adware, spyware, and worms. In this article we will only focus on viruses and how to get rid of computer viruses.

The process of removing viruses is similar to removing other forms of malware. The first thing that you have to do is determine if a virus is really in your computer system. Watch for certain signs. Does your computer seem sluggish? Do your programs, including your internet browser, look different? You need to run an antivirus software to make sure that the cause is really a computer virus. An antivirus software will find any viruses and other forms of malware from your system.

Antivirus programs can be easily obtained online. However, not all are free; most antivirus software have to be purchased. If you can afford it, do not opt for the free software. This is because paid antivirus programs often have more features, have wider range of protection, and are more up to date than free antivirus programs. Also, when choosing the best antivirus software, take note of its consumer rating and read reviews by trusted agencies and publications.

If you have an antivirus software, run a full system scan of your computer. By doing this your software will find any corrupted files and suspicious software in your system. You can wait for the system scan to finish. Scans usually take much longer if you have a lot of files and folders in your computer. If your software finds a virus or a malware, it will prompt you to isolate it. Isolating a virus means putting it in a safe area in your system where it will not infect any other files. After isolating the virus, you will be given the choice to either delete it immediately or keep it in isolation for a while. If you choose to delete it, remember to restart your computer afterwards.

Now, if you cannot remove a virus from your computer you can try researching about it. Viruses have names, so try researching about them online. If you cannot find anything about the virus infecting your computer, contact your antivirus software’s company. They might have any information about certain viruses and they might be able to give you tips on how to get rid of computer viruses.

If your computer continues to perform sluggishly, you may need to start from scratch. That is, you need to delete everything in your hard drive. Do not forget to save all of your important files in an external hard drive or in a CD before deleting.
