This is usually a common question among those who’re planning to buy a ball chair. Ball chairs come in various sizes, colors, and many have “stay ball technology”. The first things we should check out, is how your desk is arranged and how it relates to how you will sit. When selecting a ball chair, we must make sure that our legs maintain a 90 degree angle. The eyes have to be parallel with the top of your computer screen. Your elbows need to be at a 90 degree angle. When using a ball chair, it is likely you may be sitting lower to the ground than your regular chair so it might need that you install a keyboard tray for you to maintain the proper ergonomic sitting requirements. In some instances the table tops in cubicles should be lowered. Some desks are probably not adjustable, so the ball size might need to be a little bigger to support that scenario. If you have to utilize a bigger ball, it could possibly mean your legs won’t maintain the suggested 90 degree angle; however, there’s a solution for this. You could use a balance board, or a foot rest, which will be an aid to maintain the height.
All of these factors to consider ball size and we haven’t even brought up ball size. The exercise balls, are available various sizes. You can get lots of recommended sizes on the internet; however we will make it simple:
5’0″ & under – 45 cm / 18″; 5’0″ – 5’5″ – 55 cm / 22″; 5’5″ – 5’11″ – 65 cm / 26″; 6′ – 6’3″ – 75 cm / 30″ ; 6’3″ and above – 85 cm / 34″;
Please note, these are merely recommendations, and not fact. As you get the ball you can even deflate it that allows you to adjust the height. Another suggestion could be to sit on an adjustable office chair and adjust it so your legs are at 90 degrees. Then measure the distance from the floor to the top of the seat.
At the beginning of this article I mentioned “stay ball technology”. Some exercise balls contain a substance inside of them that contributes a little weight to the ball in order that it doesn’t roll away easily. This is particularly good for a ball chair, it could be a bad thing should you be in motion to sit, and the ball was missing.
There is also another angle with the ball chair. You will find ball chairs with rolling bases. These ball chairs use smaller exercise balls to make up for any added height on the base. Some have elbow rests many even have lumbar support.
